LFP Students Leading the Way to a Championship

A conversation with men's soccer captain Jacob Myers ('19) and women's volleyball standout Sarah Roberts ('19) on their teams' recent league championships

How did you and your team prepare for the moments leading up to the Championship?

Jacob (above #30): Our coaching staff prepares us by giving a scout on how to beat the upcoming team, and watching film of our opponents. For the championship game specifically, our coach emphasizes that a few nerves are normal, but to trust our skills and be confident that we are more prepared. The last thing we do before warm-ups every game is a team prayer.

Sarah (above center): Beyond the hundreds of hours of practice, workouts, and drills, my coach really focuses on team building. Team support is key in any sport but especially volleyball. We spend time on and off the court building relationships with each other. I think this is part of the reason we found so much success this year! Everyone was committed to supporting each other and seeing the team do well.

How does it feel being a Mac Champion?

Jacob: It's awesome, especially to repeat as back to back champions. It shows that all of our hard work does pay off and it motivates us to work even harder for next season because we are the team to beat.

Sarah: I feel it is a real privilege that we were able to go so far. These opportunities are earned with hard work and it's great to see all the time in the gym, working out, fundraising, etc. pay off. I feel really thankful for all those who helped us reach those achievements (coaches, athletics staff, parents, etc.). Even though our results in the Elite 8 game were not what we might have wanted, I was so proud of our team! We gave it our all and played for God's glory and that's all we can ask for!!

What are some challenges you've face this season?

JacobWe faced challenges when coming out slow in games without the proper intensity, so we must be intentional about being completely ready mentally and physically when the whistle blows. We have very high expectations next season to win the conference for the third year in a row. We are returning 10 starters and have a great group of guys who are willing to work hard.

Sarah: We had a small team this season so that was a struggle sometimes in practice. It also helped us though I think because we were all fully involved in every practice. Many of us faced injuries and pain but we were able to battle through it! This season we lose three really great seniors (Alicia, Rylie, and Steph) so moving forward, it will be difficult to find players to fill their shoes! We have had numerous recruits visit and Coach Birtwistle is excited about next year's possibilities! I am excited to put in some hard work in the gym in the spring season in anticipation for a great Fall 2017 season!!
